Experience one of Thailand’s most iconic healing arts – performed authentically, powerfully, and with deep respect for its cultural origins. Our team at Tida Thai Massage Zurich combines traditional techniques with modern comfort for a safe, relaxing and revitalising treatment.

What is Traditional Thai Massage?

Traditional Thai Massage, a healing art more than 2,500 years old, is based on the concept of energy pathways in the human body. The technique combines passive stretching positions, deep stretching movements, acupressure, and mobilisation of the joints.

Many positions are similar to yoga postures, but they are performed passively by the therapist. This is why traditional Thai massage is often called Thai yoga massage in the West. A steady but firm pressure is applied with the therapist’s hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and sometimes feet to specific points and energy lines.

This traditional thai massage therapy does more than simply work on the muscles. According to Ayurvedic teaching, the body is seen as an energetic network with ten major energy lines (Sen). The aim is to release blockages, improve circulation and support the body’s natural ability to balance and regenerate itself.

The Thai name for Traditional Thai Massage, “Nuad Phaen Boran”, is often translated as “ancient healing touch” – which perfectly describes its intention.

Traditional Thai Massage Benefits

A traditional Thai massage can help with:

  • reducing muscle stiffness

  • improving posture and mobility

  • relieving stress and tension

  • stimulating blood circulation

  • supporting recovery after long office days or physical activity

  • promoting deep relaxation

The treatment is both grounding and energising – perfect for anyone who wants more flexibility and renewed vitality.

How does a Traditional Thai Massage session work?

For a traditional Thai massage you remain comfortably dressed in loose clothing. The treatment usually takes place on our one meter wide massage bed, giving the therapist enough space to move around you.

  1. Short consultation – we briefly discuss your wishes, any discomfort and the desired intensity.

  2. Warm-up phase – gentle pressure and rocking movements prepare muscles and joints.

  3. Stretching & pressure techniques – the therapist works along the Sen lines with thumbs, palms, elbows or knees and guides you into passive stretching positions. These movements can be very dynamic, but always remain controlled.

  4. Focus areas – depending on your needs we put extra focus on back, neck, shoulders, hips or legs.

  5. Cool-down & integration – at the end the pressure becomes softer and more calming so that your nervous system can relax.

After the session many clients feel pleasantly light, more flexible and deeply relaxed – sometimes also a bit “worked out”, similar to after a good yoga class.

What is the difference compared to oil massage? Can I mix both?

Traditional Thai massage is performed without oil and focuses on pressure techniques, stretching and joint mobilization.
Specific areas may be treated with a herbal balm.

Combinations are possible:
We can mix both styles, but stretching motions are reduced because oil makes the skin too slippery.
